Playing for MSC

Mission Statement
The mission of Matanuska Soccer Club is to promote the game of soccer for teams and players by:

  • Developing individual players to their fullest potential
  • Providing the highest level of technical and tactical training
  • Teaching sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive team play
  • Providing highly skilled and capable players with opportunities to excel in the sport
  • Attracting and retaining the highest quality coaches in the area.

Tryouts & Team Trials
MSC competitive teams are in operation year-round, and as such, there is no longer a formal spring tryout. Instead, the club hosts spring and fall selection jamborees, which are designed to aid in player identification, not evaluation. Team coaches may invite any new or guest players to trial with their teams during the one month team-trial period that extends past each jamboree, or during their regular training schedule at any other time of the soccer season.

Length of Seasons
Summer: May through early August
Fall: Late August through December
Winter: January through April

Practice Schedule
MSC teams generally train a minimum of once per week throughout the fall and winter, and twice weekly during the summer season.

Summer Tournaments
In addition to UAYSL league play, MSC teams can take part in three regular-season tournaments within Alaska: Ina K, Far North and Midnight Sun. There are two postseason tournaments as well—Zane Cup for U10-U12 teams and the Alaska State Cup for U12–U19. Winners of State Cup will attend the next year’s Far West Regional Tournament, while second-place finishers currently have the option of attending the Far West Director’s Cup.

Travel
Individual MSC teams may also travel outside the state during the year, with tournament options directed by the specific age-division coaches in conjunction with the club technical director. There are varying levels of tournaments for participation outside the state, and each team is directed by MSC staff as to which level will be most competitive for them. Individual MSC players are also evaluated for a host of other travel opportunities, each designed to further aid development; these can range from travel with AKFC teams to guest-playing opportunities with Crossfire Premier. Some teams will travel once per season to a mid-level tournament, while an MSC premier team may only compete in the highest-level tournaments throughout the country.

Costs
Costs vary slightly from team to team, depending on the amount of training to be undertaken, camps, travel, etc. All players pay the same registration, club and league fee.
