2008/09 MSC Highlights
- Had club teams in operation, both training and in various league play, throughout every month of 2008.
- During the same period, player registration numbers within the club have increased by approximately %.
- Hosted USYS E/D licensing courses for our competitive team coaches.
- Continued our support of the Alaska ODP program, with over 10 MSC players traveling to the Region IV ODP camp.
- MSC United 92 competed in the Far West Regional Tournament in Hawaii. MSC players also played an important role at Far West Regionals with the AK Rush 91 boys team.
- Supported all five competitive summer tournaments within Alaska (Ina K, Midnight Sun, Far North, Zane Cup, Alaska State Cup), and produced at least one champion from the club in each of the first four tournaments.
- Hosted another successful Wasilla Thanksgiving Invitational tournament at the Wasilla Sports Complex.
- Continued operation of our Champions League Futsal in the fall, with match play now taking place at the new AT&TSportsCenter. We were the first soccer organization to utilize these new facilities.
- Had two younger boys teams travel premier-level out-of-state tournaments in 2008: MSC United 96 traveled to Oregon for the silver-ranked Adidas Beaverton Cup, where they enjoyed playing against some top competition from the Northwest. MSC United 98 traveled to Redmond, WA, for the gold-ranked Nike Crossfire Challenge in July, where they were finalists, and then to Las Vegas for the platinum-ranked Mayor’s Cup International Tournament in October, where they lost on penalty kicks in the semifinals to Mustang Soccer Club from California North. In the latter, they represented both Matanuska Soccer Club and soccer in the state of Alaska well, compiling a total goal differential of 19 for, 3 against in four games against premier competition from Nevada, Arizona and California.
- Entered into a partnership with Coerver Coaching, the worldwide leader in youth technical development. Coerver Coaching now provides all the development structure, curriculum and training programs for MSC players aged 5 through 18.
- Had two MSC competitive coaches trained and certified as Coerver Staff Coaches, and one additional coach as a Coerver-certified trainer, all of whom are now qualified to administer the Coerver method in camps, Coerver schools and clinics, and MSC team-training sessions.
- Began operation of Alaska’s first Coerver Coaching Center of Excellence (COE), providing 18 elite technical training sessions for advanced players aged 7 through 12. Almost 40 players are enrolled, representing four competitive soccer clubs, including three from Anchorage.
- Were chosen by the directors of Coerver Coaching USA and Coerver Coaching International to be one of the two American clubs licensed to initiate the Coerver Elite program this spring, a continuing development vehicle for distinguished graduates of the Coerver COE.
- Hired a new Director of Coaching, TR Stoneback from Seattle, WA, who is also the Director of Coerver Coaching NW, and an NSCAA Premier diploma holder. TR has coached several players who currently or have played on several US Youth National Teams, and he brings an immense amount of experience and knowledge to the MSC coaching staff.
- Promoted MSC coaches to leadership positions within the club, including a Technical Director and three Age-Group Directors, who report to the DOC and oversee MSC competitive, pre-competitive and development groups.
- Held over 14 hours of on-field training and education for club coaches, led by MSC Director of Coaching TR Stoneback. Opened training to other clubs and had coaches representing two Anchorage clubs attend the last sessions.
- Continued operation of the MSCYouthDevelopmentAcademy, for players aged 5 through 9 who are seeking more dynamic training opportunities, and eventually, a transition into competitive soccer. Integrated Coerver Coaching development fundamentals into the Academy training curriculum, through coaching education.
- Formed boys and girls pre-competitive teams, trained in a CoerverAcademy setting and currently entered as new competitive teams in the UAYSL winter session.
- Developed and distributed through technical and age-group directors a club-wide training and technical-development curriculum, creating a standard, comprehensive curriculum for the development of all MSC teams and players.
- Various MSC teams have now completed over ten weeklong Coerver Advanced Team Clinics with TR Stoneback, Coerver Senior Staff Coach Katie Miyake and qualified MSC staff, as well as several individual team sessions. Held a Coerver Goalkeeping education session with Coerver- and SeattleUniversity coach Andy Klubberud.
- Ceased operations with Count Me In, Inc. and have entered into a new contract for web and player-registration services with Demosphere.
- Finalizing a partnership with Adidas, aided by our existing relationship with Coerver Coaching, to become Alaska’s first Adidas Elite Club.
